NTN & Filer Status in Pakistan: The IRIS Walkthrough

PakListings Editorial Team October 23, 2026 6 min read

Ask five people what an NTN is and you will get five different answers — and at least three of them will confuse it with being a filer. They are two different doors, and walking through the first does not open the second. This guide clears up the five misunderstandings that waste the most time, then walks each path in order.

Misunderstanding one: the NTN is not filer status

An NTN — a National Tax Number — is an identity in the tax system. For individuals it is your CNIC number once registered in IRIS; companies and firms receive their own registration numbers. Getting an NTN means the FBR knows you exist as a taxpayer.

Filer status is something else entirely: it comes from filing the annual income tax return by the deadline, and it is confirmed by your name appearing on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL). You can hold an NTN for years without ever being a filer, and the difference shows up in the withholding tax deducted from your bank transactions, property deals and vehicle purchases.

  • • NTN: your identity in the tax system — registration in IRIS.
  • • Filer: the status you earn by filing the annual return on time.
  • • The ATL is the list that proves it — check your name there, not on your NTN certificate.

Salaried: the shortest path

If you are salaried, the path is short. Register on FBR’s IRIS portal with your CNIC, mobile number and email; IRIS sends verification codes to both, which you enter to set your password and PIN — store both somewhere safe, because losing them costs days. Then fill in your particulars exactly as they should appear on your tax record: personal details, contact information and your income sources.

Your employer already deducts tax from your salary, so the return is mostly a matter of declaring that income, any other income, and your assets. File it, and then confirm your name on the ATL.

  • • Register on IRIS with CNIC, mobile and email; verify both with the codes sent.
  • • Set your password and PIN, and store them safely.
  • • Fill the particulars exactly as they should appear on your tax record.

Freelancers and small businesses

Freelancers and small businesses follow the same IRIS registration, but the return needs more care: income from clients, expenses, bank accounts, and assets all go in, and the figures should match your bank statements. Keep invoices and receipts through the year — reconstructing them in June is how mistakes happen.

If you work for foreign clients, keep the payment trail clean: contracts, invoices, and the bank record of each transfer. The tax treatment of foreign income has its own rules, and a clean paper trail is what lets you claim the treatment you are entitled to.

  • • Same IRIS registration; a more detailed return for business income.
  • • Keep invoices and receipts through the year — not reconstructed in June.
  • • Foreign clients: keep contracts, invoices and the bank record of every transfer.

Checking your name on the Active Taxpayer List

FBR publishes an Active Taxpayer List, and you can check it on the FBR website by searching your CNIC — there is also an SMS check: text your CNIC number to 9966 and the reply tells you your status. Check after filing, not before, and give the system time to update before you panic.

If your name is missing after you filed, the common causes are a return filed late, a return filed with an error, or a mismatch between the return and your registration details. Fix the cause and file correctly — paying a stranger to “add your name to the list” is a scam, not a service.

Practical note: Nobody can add your name to the ATL for a fee. Filer status comes from filing the return — anyone selling a shortcut is selling a scam.
  • • Check on the FBR website by CNIC, or text your CNIC to 9966.
  • • Check after filing, and allow time for the list to update.
  • • A missing name usually means a late return, an error, or a details mismatch.

What changes once you file

The practical difference of filer status is the withholding tax on everyday transactions: bank withdrawals and transfers, property purchases, vehicle registration, and several other dealings all deduct less from filers than from non-filers. Over a year, for an active business or a salaried person buying property, the difference is real money.

There is a second difference that matters more over time: a filed return is a paper trail. Banks, visa officers and business partners all read it as evidence of real, declared income. The first return is the hardest; after that it is a habit, and a habit that pays.

  • • Lower withholding on bank, property, vehicle and other transactions.
  • • A filed return is proof of declared income for banks and partners.
  • • File every year, on time — one missed year breaks the habit and the status.

Frequently asked questions

Does a freelancer need an NTN? Yes, if you earn taxable income — register on IRIS, keep your invoices and bank records, and file the return each year.

Is my CNIC my NTN? For individuals, yes: the NTN is your CNIC number once the CNIC is registered in IRIS. Companies and firms receive their own registration numbers.

How do I check my filer status? Search your CNIC on the Active Taxpayer List on the FBR website, or text your CNIC to 9966 — the reply tells you your status.

What if I file late? File as soon as you can and fix the cause — a late return is better than no return, and the ATL updates after a correct filing.

I lost my IRIS password and PIN — now what? Use the recovery options on IRIS with your registered mobile and email, and store the new credentials somewhere safe this time.
